Abstract

The domestic wastewater treatment systems are an important infrastructure for reducing biological and chemical pollution from household waste so that it does not damage the environment. Therefore, wastewater treatment must operate optimally and meet quality standards in accordance with the 2016 regulations of the Ministry of Environment and Forestry. The Community Wastewater Treatment Plant (IPAL) in Hegarmanah Village, Cianjur Regency, began operations in 2021 and serves 50 households (196 people). Initially, it used an aerobic system, but in 2023, it was replaced with an anaerobic system due to high electricity operational costs. As the population increases, the wastewater load also increases, necessitating an evaluation of the IPAL's performance. This study used a quantitative descriptive method through observation and laboratory testing of domestic wastewater. Tests were conducted at the inlet and outlet of the IPAL to assess the reduction in primary pollutant parameters, namely BOD, COD, and TSS. The results showed an efficiency of over 80%. BOD decreased from 246 mg/L to 29 mg/L, COD from 737 mg/L to 88 mg/L, and TSS from 74 mg/L to 6 mg/L. However, the outlet BOD and COD values still did not meet the discharge quality standards for Class 4 rivers. Therefore, it is recommended to implement a combination of anaerobic and aerobic systems to enhance treatment effectiveness. The use of infiltration wells is also recommended as additional filtration to reduce pollutants before water infiltrates into the soil, thereby supporting sustainable wastewater management.
