Abstract

The problem of this study is the low reading comprehension ability of elementary school students due to several factors, namely inappropriate learning methods and students' lack of interest in reading. The solution offered is the use of the SQ3R learning method, because it has stages that can make students understand the content of the reading better. The purpose of this study is to determine the extent of the effectiveness of the SQ3R learning method when used on the reading comprehension ability of grade IV students. The method used is an experiment with a quantitative approach of true experimental design in the form of a pretest-posttest control group using an experimental class and a control class. The population in this study is all high-grade students from two elementary schools, namely SDN Cijambe Girang and SDN Cijambe Tengah and the sample was taken from grade IV students from each of the two schools selected by simple random sampling technique. The data collection technique of this research is in the form of observation, test and documentation with research instruments observation sheets and test sheets. The data analysis technique to test the hypothesis of this study uses the t-test and the N-Gain test. The results of the calculation of the hypothesis test obtained Sig. (2-tailed) pretest and posttest values in the experimental class of 0.000 < 0.05 so that Ho was rejected and Ha was accepted. Based on data analysis, the experimental class obtained an average N-Gain test result of 61.51% and the control class of 4.51%. The results are based on the N-Gain effectiveness interpretation category , showing that the SQ3R learning method is effectively used for reading comprehension skills in grade IV elementary school students with an effectiveness level of "quite effective".
