Abstract

With the discovery of many irregularities in the death case of Brigadier Novriyansyah Yosua Hutabarat (Brigadier J) involving the figure of the Head of the Profession and Security Division (Propam) Ferdy Sambo in 2022, it has attracted public attention. Through illustrations on its magazine cover, Tempo Magazine has become a bridge in conveying information and monitoring the progress of the case. With a distinctive visual style, it often leads to expanded interpretations. This refers to the signs, codes, and meanings contained therein. According to Azhar Natsir Ahdiyat (2021) in the journal “Visual Semiotics Analysis on the Cover Illustration of Tempo Magazine’s “Jerat Kedua” Edition” the cover illustration of Tempo Magazine’s “Jerat Kedua” edition is capable of making communication and signification functions work well through implied codes and meanings. Tempo Magazine has published eight editions discussing the connection between Ferdy Sambo and the death case of Brigadier J. This research was conducted using a descriptive qualitative approach by analyzing theories related to literature sources and using visual semiotics methods based on Roland Barthes theory, which includes visual sign structures, five Barthes codes, and myth disclosures. The results of this study are the disclosure of visual sign structures, denotative meanings, connotative meanings, five Barthes codes, and myths contained therein. Also, the connection between each edition is seen from the graphic design elements displayed.
