Abstract
The short film "The Lost Thing" is a work that creates a unique bond between musical, visual and meaning elements. Qualitative research was conducted with the aim of uncovering the relationship between the musical and visual elements in the film and Ferdinand de Saussure's theory of semiotics. Data collection was carried out through observation, literature study, and document analysis. Data analysis uses a semiotic approach to explore signs and meanings in visual and audio texts. Research reveals that the film embraces Western Australian sensibilities, creates an atmosphere of isolation and conveys a sense of detachment. The quality of the film is enriched by the careful mix of music, sound effects, Foley, and narration, which together provide an immersive experience for the audience. Despite depicting a grotesque urban landscape and unconventional technology, the threats are subtle and create an oddly Kafkaesque feel. Thus, this research results in a deeper understanding of how the musical and visual elements in "The Lost Thing" contribute to conveying meaning in the film.
