Abstract

This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of the Problem Based Learning (PBL) model assisted by board games on students’ basic literacy skills in the IPAS subject, which include linguistic, numeracy, and scientific literacy. The research employed a quantitative approach with a true experimental design in the form of a posttest- only control group design. The sample consisted of 34 fifth-grade students, comprising 17 students in the experimental class at SDN Ciheulang Girang and 17 students in the control class at SDN 2 Pasir Datar Indah, selected through purposive sampling. The research instruments were validated and tested for reliability, while the data were analyzed using normality tests, homogeneity tests, independent sample t-tests, and N-Gain calculations. The results showed that the experimental class achieved higher average scores in linguistic literacy (80.29), scientific literacy (80.41), and numeracy literacy (78.56) compared to the control class, all within the high category. The independent sample t-test confirmed significant differences between the experimental and control classes in all three literacy aspects (Sig. < 0.05). Furthermore, the N-Gain results indicated an improvement in students’ basic literacy skills, falling into the medium to high category, after participating in PBL assisted by board games. Thus, the PBL model assisted by board games is proven effective in enhancing students’ basic literacy skills and can serve as an alternative strategy for literacy learning in elementary schools.
