Abstract

Cataracts are a leading cause of blindness worldwide, including in Indonesia, requiring early detection for more effective treatment. Eye examinations using conventional medical devices tend to be expensive and unaffordable. Therefore, this study aims to design and build a smartphone-based fundus scope mechanical system as an affordable, easy-to-use, and portable alternative for cataract diagnosis. The method used was Design Thinking, with the stages of empathize, define, ideate, prototype, and test. The prototype was created using Autodesk Inventor software and printed using a 3D printer. The results showed that this device is capable of producing fairly clear retinal images, is lightweight at 232 grams, is easy to use by medical personnel, and is affordable. In conclusion, this fundus scope is effective as a cataract detection tool for early screening in various locations without requiring a hospital visit, although there are still shortcomings in the image capture process.
