Abstract
Traffic management, in general, is a crucial process in creating a safe and efficient transportation system. Traffic lights are part of the devices used to regulate vehicle flow at intersection, especially at pedestrian crossings (zebra crossings). A pelican crossing is a type of pedestrian crossing that is controlled by traffic lights and operated by pedestrians. Pedestrians must press the pelican crossing button first to request a green light for vehicles to stop, allowing them to cross the road safely. However, pedestrian crossings are often overlooked, leading to a high number of accidents, especially in areas without intelligent traffic lights systems. Globally, traffic-related fatalities reach 1.25 million people annually, with an additional 50 suffering serious injuries. Of these accidents, 90% occur in developing countries. For example, according to WHO data published in 2020, traffic accidents in South Korea resulted in 4.399 deaths, accounting for 1.76% of total deaths in the country, with a fatality rate of approcimately 5.76 per 100.000 population. As a solution, this study designs a pelican crossing system using PLC-based traffic lights and the XG5000 application. The PLC (programmable logic controller) functions as the main controller responsible for handling traffic light timing synchronization. The XG5000 application is used for simulating, designin, and controlling the PLC- based system, enabling a more efficient and effective design. The research methods include field observations at one-way pedestrian crossings and a literature review related to traffic management technologies. Simulations using the XG5000 application are conducted to analyze the system’s effectiveness in enhancing pedestrian safety.
