Abstract
Blind spot is one of the leading causes of traffic accidents in four-wheeled vehicles due to the driver's limited visibility in certain areas around the vehicle. This study aims to design and develop a blind spot monitoring system based on ultrasonic sensors capable of detecting the presence of objects in the blind spot area and providing real-time warnings to the driver. The system utilizes four ultrasonic sensors, an Arduino Mega 2560 microcontroller, a buzzer as an audible indicator, and a 20x4 LCD as a visual display for object distance. The research method involves hardware and software development, sensor calibration, and performance testing in various scenarios. The calibration results show a high level of accuracy with an average error of 0.77%. The system successfully detects various objects such as vehicles, motorcycles, and pedestrians in almost all testing scenarios, with an average response time ranging from 0.11 to 3.9 seconds. However, the system has limitations in detecting objects moving at speeds above 30 km/h due to the inherent limitations of ultrasonic sensor technology. This study proves that the developed blind spot monitoring system is effective in enhancing driving safety while offering a more cost-efficient solution compared to radar- or camera-based technologies.
