Abstract

Asthma is a chronic respiratory disease triggered by exposure to poor Air Quality, such as pollution, extreme temperatures, and harmful gases. This study aims to develop an Internet of Things (IoT)-based Air Quality monitoring system to assist asthma patients in monitoring environmental conditions in real time. The system utilizes a NodeMCU ESP32 microcontroller integrated with DHT11 (temperature), MQ-135 (CO gas), and GP2Y1010AUF (PM2.5) sensors, and supports notifications via Telegram as well as information display through an OLED screen. The Mamdani Fuzzy logic method is implemented to determine asthma risk levels based on input from the three sensors, with rule bases designed and validated using MATLAB. A total of 45 tests were conducted, including sensor calibration and fuzzy system validation. The average sensor calibration error was approximately 2.77%, which is considered acceptable for household-scale monitoring. Meanwhile, the fuzzy inference results from Arduino were found to be 100% consistent with MATLAB across 15 testing scenarios. The notification feature demonstrated an average delivery time of ±2.4 seconds, although network performance may influence transmission speed under certain conditions. Based on these findings, the system shows potential as a self- monitoring tool for asthma patients, though further improvements are still needed for broader application.
