Abstract
Cibatu Village, located in Cisaat District, Sukabumi Regency, is known for many of its residents working as blacksmiths. Blacksmiths in Cibatu use oil as a quenching medium because they believe that oil has an appropriate cooling rate. However, the use of oil as a quenching medium is not environmentally friendly. Therefore, a more environmentally friendly quenching medium is needed that has cooling properties almost the same as oil. Nyamplung Oil can be used as an alternative quenching medium because it has properties similar to oil, especially in terms of cooling rate and viscosity. This study aims to determine the effect of using Nyamplung Oil on the hardness and microstructure of machetes produced in Cibatu. Sampling was carried out at RT 21/RW 5, Cibatu Village. Tests carried out included hardness tests and microstructure tests. Observation results from the hardness test of rockwell type C, obtained different hardness values, the average hardness value obtained in the sample without treatment was 33.3 HRC while in the nyamplung oil sample there was an average value of 51.5 HRC, and in the super mesran oil sample there was an average value of 52.5 HRC. The results of the microstructure test observations showed that the sample without treatment had a ferrite and pearlite microstructure. Meanwhile, the sample using nyamplung oil as a quenching medium produced a martensite and bainite microstructure and the sample using super mesran oil as a quenching medium produced a martensite and bainite microstructure. After conducting the FTIR test on nyamplung oil, there were several functional groups C-H, C≡C, C=O, C=C, CH2, C-NO2, and C-O which could affect the hardness of the golok specimen.
