Abstract

The welding process produces fumes, vapors, and hazardous particles that can cause health issues such as respiratory diseases and lung cancer if not properly managed. To address this issue, an efficient fume extractor system is required. This study aims to design and analyze the piping system for a welding fume extractor suitable for the Mechanical Engineering workshop at Nusa Putra University. The study employs the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) method to simulate fluid flow patterns, pressure distribution, turbulence intensity, and emission control effectiveness across various types of pipes, including spiral pipes, corrugated pipes, and straight pipes. The simulation results reveal that straight pipes exhibit more stable flow patterns, uniform velocity distribution, and controlled turbulence intensity compared to other pipe types. straight pipes also demonstrate better efficiency in reducing flow resistance. Conversely, corrugated pipes generate higher turbulence levels, making them less efficient for fluid transport. Based on the analysis, straight pipes are recommended as the optimal solution for the fume extractor system.Considering these findings, the fume extractor system can be optimally designed to enhance safety and health in the work environment, particularly during welding processes in the Mechanical Engineering workshop at Nusa Putra University.
