Abstract
The Mechanical Engineering Workshop of Universitas Nusa Putra frequently conducts metal welding processes that generate hazardous fumes and particles, potentially causing health issues and degrading air quality. Currently, the workshop lacks an adequate Fume Extractor system, leading to the accumulation of harmful emissions in the air. This study aims to identify the requirements and determine the optimal fan type and specifications for the Fume Extractor system in welding processes at the workshop. The Simple Additive Weighting (SAW) method is used to select the best fan based on airflow needs analysis. The parameters analyzed include room dimensions, air change per hour (ACH), and fan performance. The results indicate that a centrifugal fan with an airflow capacity of 900 m³/h, noise level of 65.3 dB – 79.3 dB, and high efficiency is the optimal choice. The designed system effectively reduces hazardous emissions to comply with workplace safety standards. This study concludes that the proposed Fume Extractor system effectively improves air quality and workplace safety.
